Rioja and Steak at The Ash

The Virginia Ash Pub in Henstridge presents its Wine of The Week- Rioja Monte Llano 2019

Rioja is a Spanish classic, and no better example of this is the 2019 harvest Rioja Monte Llano. It is the perfect partner for all things grilled!
Unusually this fresh fruit wine, made from the Tempranillo grape is produced without the use of Oak maturation. It is a bright red violet coloured wine with a purple tint and has aromas of redcurrants and blackberries. Think 'forest fruits' when you taste it.
The producers of this fine wine have been voted Spanish Winery of the Year in 2009 and again in 2014 and the 'Bodegas' was first established in 1924, nearly 100 years ago. It is one of the first Spanish wines to be classified D.O.C.a. and luckily for you the harvest rating for 2019 was "Excelente".

Pizza Takeaways from The Ash

PIZZA MARGHERITA

Made with thin slices of mozarella the margherita pizza was named either to honour the visit of Queen Margherita of Savoy or simply because the thin, round slices of mozarella were arranged on top of the pizza in the shape of a daisy.

HAWAIIAN PIZZA

Topped with ham and pineapple, the Hawaiian pizza was not an Italian invention. It also didn't come from the island of Hawaii. It was invented in Canada in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant.

FOUR CHEESE PIZZA

Quatro Formaggi starts with a layer of mozzarella, which helps the other three cheeses to not burn when cooking. This pizza is credited with being from the Lazio region of Italy.

PEPPERONI PIZZA

Oddly enough, pepperoni itself was not invented in Italy! It was actually created in New York City in the early 20th century and is still America's favourite style of pizza topping.

MEAT FEAST PIZZA

This one is a modern invention, combining different meats including salami. It is often called Meat Lovers Pizza.

BBQ CHICKEN PIZZA

Barbecue pizza was first made in Memphis, Tennessee, using pulled pork and barbecue sauce, and is popular in the Southern States of The US, but BBQ Chicken pizza was invented in California in the 1980's by Ed LaDou for the California Pizza Kitchen, a new chain of pizza restaurants. LaDou was renowned for his unusual and creative toppings.

Mexican Evening at The Ash

The Virginia Ash Pub in Henstridge are hosting a Mexican Evening on Thursday 20th April from 6.00pm to 9.00pm. It's an 'All You Can Eat' buffet of Mexican Classics and costs £15 per person, including a free drink! Booking is recommended for all our themed food evenings which sell out pretty quickly.
