DINING AT THE VIRGINIA ASH

SPACIOUS AND COSY

The charming and beautiful interior of the Virginia Ash is perfect for dining. From cosy corners with tables for couples to open plan 'rooms' suitable for parties and larger groups, the restaurant areas show off our historic building to its best, with exposed beams and natural stone work.

OUR

HIDDEN SECRET

You can barely see it from the road, but in our grounds we have the most beautiful secluded garden areas, with outdoor tables nestled between palms, trees and unusual shrubs. On sunny days and balmy nights you can enjoy your lunches and dinners here, served outside to your table.

RELAX

AND UNWIND

Whether you're taking a well earned break on your journey or just want to unwind after a long day at work, come and visit us, relax and enjoy a warm welcome and delicious home cooked food - inside or al fresco!

THE VIRGINIA ASH

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The Virginia Ash dates back to Tudor times. The name comes from the legend that Sir Walter Raleigh, on returning from Virginia in 1586 and settling in nearby Sherborne, first smoked tobacco here. His servant doused him with a bucket of water after seeing clouds of smoke coming from Raleigh's pipe, in the belief that he had been set alight. Of course, smoking is not permitted in a pub these days, but for those of you who still enjoy tobacco we have a covered area, just outside the pub, aptly named "The Raleigh Room".
